Chicago In Austin

Posted by Lazlo Hollyfeld

For those of you who travel down to SXSW, you know that Schubas always throws a helluva party at Austin's Yard Dog Gallery. Here's the early word on acts currently scheduled to perform during the day on Thursday 3/17...

Dogs Die in Hot Cars
Lou Barlow (Solo)
By Divine Right
Micah P. Hinson
Willy Mason (Solo)
Natural History
Robbers On High Street

Also, local outfit Biz 3 is sending out word that a bunch of their clients will be performing at one of the official SXSW showcases on Saturday 3/19 at Emo's. Performers include...

Buck 65
Saul Williams
Aesop Rock
The Perceptionists
C-Rayz Walz
Beans
and local boy Kenny Jenkins (aka Diverse)

And in other Biz 3 news, it's time again tomorrow for ther monthly Sonotheque event, here's the scoop on this installment...

February 11th @ Sonotheque (1444 Chicago Ave), 10pm
The Biz 3 Deejays (Damon Locks, Ben Fasman, Major Taylor)
Rik Shaw (Deadly Dragons)
Shon Dervis
Tone B Nimble (All Natural)
Supreme Court (Sheer Magic)
Liz Armstrong

Having noticed that Buck 65 is playing on 3/10 at the Abbey, and that Biz 3 promised him lined up for a future Sonotheque night, I'm gonna go out on a limb w/ conjecture, and hope they were talking about 3/11. 'Cause as we learned last year, Lazlo loves Buck 65.

AMAs mean nothin' to me

Rumor has it Kanye West's College Dropout will take the Village Voice Pazz and Jop poll - in a relatively narrow win over Loretta Lynn and former St. Charles resident Brian Wilson - when it's released later today. Among other reported top finishers with Chicago connections: TV On the Radio (Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes, released by our own Touch and Go Records, #12) Wilco (A Ghost Is Born, #13), Fiery Furnaces (Blueberry Boat, #17), Joanna Newsom (The Milk-Eyed Mender, on Drag City, #20), Gretchen Wilson (Here for the Party by the Metro East native, #46), Iron and Wine (the Engine-tracked, Brian Deck-produced Our Endless Numbered Days, #48).

Update: The leaked totals were right. Check the results, then come back and discuss in the comments below.

That's keeping it real

Thieves, one of them purported to be the brother of thug MC DMX, fled with more than $8,000 in cash paid for tickets to a planned DMX show in the state capital on Saturday. Needless to say, the concert never happened. The State Journal Register has the Keystone Kops-worthy details.

No scheduled tour dates are listed on the DMX site at defjam.com. (Oddly, the site also neglects to mention his December arrest for driving 104 MPH in a 65 zone. On a suspended license. In an unregistered vehicle.)

(It does, however, say that DMX is "working on a new Saturday Morning Cartoon called 'Boomer' named after his beloved pitbull that is tattooed on his back" and will soon be seen in a Broadway production of "Cain & Abel.")

Don't know why Springfieldmuzik hasn't picked up on this one yet.

Charlie, Kanye; Kanye, Charlie

Kanye West was in the interview chair on PBS' Charlie Rose show last night - for those, like us, who missed it, WYCC Channel 20 will rebroadcast the episode at 5 pm today. (If you don't live in Chicago, check your local listings.)

Kanye is slated to perform "Jesus Walks" at the Grammy Awards on Sunday. (No word on whether Mom will spit a hot verse, as above.)

Did he mention he's a heaven-sent genius and up for 10 statues?

WFS

Posted by Lazlo Hollyfeld

I've been diagnosed with a new disease, which I'm naming Wilco Fatigue Syndrome (or WFS, if you're into the whole brevity thing).

Just when I thought I was approaching a remission from being overloaded (what with the books (Kot's & the band's) and the AGIB bonus disc and the poetry collection and the candy bar and the official lingerie line), I had a relapse upon reading the following buried in the latest Message From Nels:

April into May there's more Wilco, including a 4 night run in Chicago which will be recorded/filmed for a 'live' DVD.

Hopefully "Kingpin" will be left off (I still can't believe it's back in their sets...if you ever want a hint on how to torture me A Clockwork Orange style, just lock down my eyelids and force me to repeatedly view an interminable live version of that song).
